If used in a "View" or just to find an element, the search is an "every day" feature. Learn how to extend the search with SQL-queries and addin functionality and how powerful Enterprise Architect can be for you.

When creating a new MDG-Technology you may need to also create your very own “User-definde search”.
A user-defined search can not only be used by the user himself but also in “Views” to enrich your model by better user experience.

The “normal” Search respective the “Query Builder” are an excelent choice for this, but sometimes you have requirements that can only be solved with an SQL-Query or the hard/complex one only with an addin.

For such a case Enterprise Architect got a very got documentation on how to do so.

With macros #xxx# , EA allows you to customize queries for your database, such as:

MYSQL

JET

ORACLE

SQLSVR

ASA

OPENEDGE

POSTGRES.

The most important macros of course are: wildcards: #WC# and #DB=<DBName># which allows the creator to adapt the query to the needed “SQL-Syntax dialect”.

For those how need to pusch the boundaries of SQL, there is another possiblity inside of Enterprise Architect. The “Addin-Search” allows you to call a function of you addin inside the search. All you need to do is “call” the function using the addin name and the function name seperated with a dot: (MyAddin.RunThisMethod).
